4. What is control? What are the pre-requisite and characteristics of effective
control system? Explain with the help of examples you have had in an
organizational set up. Briefly describe the organisation you are referring to.
Ans. Control
is a process of assuring the efficient accomplishment of enterprise objectives.
While at one time it helps in anticipating problems, on the other hand, it also
helps in measuring performance against the standards. It helps in taking
corrective actions for deviations from plans and also helps in modifying the
planning process. Although sometimes this term signifies negative situation,
however, this goes as the other way round for it helps in facilitating
functions and aiding the organisation accomplishing the set objectives. All the
managers with a responsibility of executing plans should know the significance
of control.
Controlling
has a significant role in an organisation. The quality controlling helps in
accomplishing the enterprise objectives. No matter in which department the
manager is doing his job, but it is for sure that he should know the basic
principles of controlling. This process of controlling entirely relies on
plans. The process of controls should be appropriate, strategic, acceptable,
objective and cost-effective. In general, there are three basic steps involved
in the controlling process. These include establishing standards, measuring
performance and reinforcing the success. Further, the process of controls could
be constant, periodic or occasional, should be centralised or dispersed, formal
or informal and direct or indirect.
